Decide how big you want your bed to be. A 4x4-foot square is a great start—it’s easy to reach across and ideal for small spaces. If you’re lucky, the lumber yard will cut it for you. If not, grab a good saw and channel your inner carpenter.
Recommended Tools:
Don’t let the word "assembly" scare you. This isn’t an IKEA bookshelf. Arrange your planks into a square or rectangle, then screw them together at the corners. It’s okay if it’s a bit wobbly—once you fill it with soil, it’s not going anywhere.
Garden Hack: Grab some extra corner posts and build a simple frame. Attach a screen to the frame using staples, then secure it to your raised bed with a couple of hinges. Voilà—a built-in raised bed protector to keep your precious veggies safe from pesky garden destroyers! (blueprint coming for this soon)
Find a sunny spot in your yard. Lay down some cardboard or landscape fabric to block weeds. This helps prevent those pesky garden gatecrashers from taking over your masterpiece. Place your assembled bed on top, step back, and admire your progress.

Time to fill your bed with soil. Personally, I love composting my own soil—it’s sustainable and cost-effective. But when I fall behind, I trust Coast of Maine. Their nutrient-packed blends have been my go-to for going on four years, delivering organic results without the guesswork.
Recommended Soils:
Fill the bed to about an inch from the top—no need to be overly precise. Nature isn’t fussy! Want to know more about composting from scratch? Let me know in the comments below!
The fun part: planting! Whether it’s juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce, or fragrant herbs, plant what you love. Be sure to space them appropriately and water them well. Same rule of thumb for planting from seed.
Remember: Make sure you put the seeds in according to their adult sizes. Ensure they’ll all have enough room to stretch out at full growth and won't be competing for space and nutrients. This can really make or break your overall yield-i've learned the hard way from experience. Not fun! Make sure you always plan your planting accordingly.
These are really the only three seed companies I’ll purchase from on amazon and even in my local garden stores if they have them in stock. I also go to them directly from their own sites quite often, to take advantage of their company deals and specials. Organo Republic sells large bags with multiple varieties of seeds based on popularity or time of year etc. It makes the planning part of things just a bit easier if time just isn’t being my friend that year
Step back, snap a photo, and share your hard work on social media—your friends won’t believe you built it yourself! In a few weeks, you’ll be harvesting fresh, homegrown produce from your very own raised bed.
Want to go the extra mile? Get your hands on some eco-friendly outdoor paint and really make a statement with your own personal signature! Paint anything you want on it-the bed is your oyster! I took the time to gather some links to some of these paints that I myself have personally used. Most offer indoor options as well, say for painting fun things on your kiddos walls! (I did the alphabet last year above my kiddos cribs. When they woke up in the morning I would hear them saying the alphabet and just having a ball.
Anyways, maybe I’ll make a post about that some time. For now let’s wrap up the garden bed project and get to the fun bit! Showing it off!
Building a raised garden bed is more than just a weekend project—it’s a step toward a sustainable and self-reliant lifestyle. With a little effort and the right tools, you’ll be on your way to a thriving garden in no time.
