DIY Raised Garden Bed: A Low-Cost, High-Reward Project

DIY Designs by Caroline

Ever dreamed of growing your own veggies but think you need a degree in horticulture and a wallet as deep as a well? Think again! Building a raised garden bed is the perfect weekend project, and the best part? It won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Let’s get our hands dirty and create a garden bed that’s easy on the budget and big on rewards.

Summary of Materials:

  • (4) 4-foot long 2x6 or 2x8 wood planks
  • (Optional) (4) 12-inch long 2x2 or 4x4 corner posts
  • (12-16) 3-inch outdoor screws - These can get lost easily. I like to buy extras
  • 8 cubic feet of soil

The above measurements will allow you to build a sturdy 4x4 raised garden bed that’s easy to assemble and perfect for small gardening spaces. If you want to increase the height of your bed, simply use taller planks or stack additional layers of wood.

Materials & Measurements:

  • Wood Planks: 4 planks
  • Dimensions: 2x6 inches (thickness x height) or 2x8 inches, depending on how deep you want your bed to be.
  • Length: 4 feet each (48 inches)

  • Corner Posts (Optional): 4 posts
  • Dimensions: 2x2 inches or 4x4 inches (for added stability)
  • Length: 12 inches each (this will give you about 6 inches buried in the ground for stability and 6 inches above ground).

  • Screws or Nails: 12 to 16 screws
  • Dimensions: 3-inch outdoor screws (to securely join the planks at the corners)

  • Soil: Enough to fill the 4x4 bed to the desired depth
  • Volume: Approximately 8 cubic feet of soil if you’re using 2x6 planks (about 6 inches deep)

Step 1: Measure Twice, Cut Once

Decide how big you want your bed to be. A 4x4 foot square is a good start—it’s easy to reach across and perfect for small spaces. Cut your wood to size. If you’re lucky, the lumber yard will cut it for you. If not, well, it’s time to channel your inner carpenter.

Step 2: Assembly Time!

Now, don’t let the word "assembly" scare you. This isn’t an IKEA bookshelf. Simply arrange your wood planks into a rectangle (or square), then screw them together at the corners. You’ll feel like a DIY pro in no time. Don’t worry if it’s a bit wobbly—once it’s filled with soil, it’s not going anywhere.

Step 3: Location, location, location

Find a sunny spot in your yard. Lay down some cardboard or landscape fabric where the bed will go—this will help prevent weeds from gatecrashing your garden party. Place your newly assembled bed on top, and give yourself a pat on the back. It’s looking good already!

Step 4: Fill 'er Up

Time to fill your bed with soil. Personally, I love to compost my own soil. But sometimes I fall behind, and when that happens I turn to Coast of Maine. I've been using this brand as my "fill-in" for about 4 years now and I will never go back. Fill the bed to about an inch from the top—don’t worry about being too precise. Nature isn’t fussy.

Step 5: Plant Your Greens

Now for the fun part: planting! Whether it’s juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce, or fragrant herbs, plant what you love. Give them a little space to grow, water them well, and watch your garden bed come to life.

Step 6: Admire Your Work

Step back, admire your handiwork, and maybe snap a photo for social media—your friends won’t believe you built it yourself. In a few weeks, you’ll be enjoying fresh, homegrown produce, all from a garden bed you built with your own two hands.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to give your plants a little pep talk—they’ll appreciate the encouragement. After all, happy plants make for a bountiful harvest!
